Tonight Show dog food advert, with Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon (1972)

If there were ever any doubt that Johnny Carson is one of the greatest personalities in the history of broadcasting, here’s a clip of why he was so good. A wholly improvised (and live) piece of whimsy rescues an unfortunate McMahon during a sponsor spot gone awry. I suspect I’m not being unfair when I say Leno, Letterman or Jonathan Ross would do something like that.
