Today were going to design a house for Jay Leno. Not because Ive been asked but because he loves cars and so do I. First let me say that Im going to condense things here quite a bit, the work you see in this video has been completed in two days, not two months or even two years both of which might be realistic depending on the tenacity of the client. First Im going to ume jay owns some land, lets say on a tropical island thats well inhabited so it also has roads. Lets also say the location would be a perfect place to drive some of his favorite sports cars and motorcycles & shoot his show – Jay Lenos Garage. Let me also say that Im a huge fan of Mies Van der rohes work in steel and glass and the Phillip Johnsons glass house, both of which I will draw on for inspiration. At first I thought it might be neat to make a building that created an amazing background to talk about cars that would be the ocean. So my first couple sketches really separate the building into two forms with distinct functions. One more private, one more public. The private being the living quarters, the public being the area where his web show might be filmed. In My first couple sketches have the public portion of the building jutting out into the ocean so his cars can sit right on the roof of the house and can be filmed with the ocean as the backdrop. This is an interesting solution but it blocks the view of the more private part of the residence where, at the end of the day, you really want the views. So I switched them. Now, Jays married with no kids so we dont have to worry as much about site safety issues & being right on the water. I know Jay writes for a magazine, probably loves great views, and will enjoy being close to his cars & motor bikes, so lets make this happen. The Private portion of the home extends out into the ocean. The Public portion (where the cars are kept and filming occurs) runs along the beach. The entire building is held off the ground at least one story and might even consist of some kind of treated lumber pier structural system that let it raise in height to avoid the rising tide or it might even float like a pier. The cars might be let into the storage wing using a movable ramp of sorts, and they could be lifted onto the roof using elevators at either ends of the rectangular forms. The roof would be used for filming. The private portion of the house is two stories. The first floor has all the living amenities including Mudroom, Powder rooms, Kitchen, Dining, Living and Family room at the end of the wing to really take advantage of the view. The second floor would include the bedrooms for guests and the master suite out at the end of the form. The tower you see at the juncture of the two forms would be used for video production & broadcasting. So there you go Jay
